PostgreSQL database architecture

Will more disks yield increased database performance? What is the ideal size for a server, and how much RAM should there be? Do you need more replicas? How do you decide which replication method to use? When it comes to these questions, CYBERTEC is the right partner to have by your side.

Our consultants are happy to share their insights and help you with choosing the optimal infrastructure as well as the right replication solution for your PostgreSQL database. We will help you develop the ideal database setup – in terms of hardware, user concept and expected workload – all based on your specific operational and infrastructure requirements.

Hardware

Deploying a large-scale PostgreSQL server infrastructure requires some know-how and experience. When the question of whether to use real hardware or fully virtualized systems arises, our consultants are here to help you make the right decisions. However, the underlying hardware can definitely make a difference – this is even true for a fully virtualized infrastructure. In short: achieving maximum performance on physical hardware and virtualized systems requires careful planning, and we can provide you with all the necessary expertise.

In case you are aiming for real physical hardware, the RAID level makes a real difference. RAID-5 does not deliver the same performance as, for instance, RAID-10. The same applies to filesystems. Not all filesystems are equally fast and equally suitable for good database performance. In the long run, COW filesystems such as “btrfs” tend to be considerably slower than classical filesystems such as XFS and ext4.

RUNNING POSTGRESQL IN THE CLOUD

PostgreSQL can also be deployed as a cloud application. Running a database server in a public cloud, or even in your own private cloud environment can contribute to significant cost reduction and reduced administrative overhead. We help to install, run and manage your PostgreSQL/Kubernetes infrastructure.

Replication

Within the PostgreSQL ecosystem, there are various replication solutions. We support you in finding the replication strategy that best suits your needs, and assist you in selecting the right tooling and setup. Is synchronous or asynchronous replication the better choice for your use case? What is the ideal tool to achieve high availability? We work very closely with our customers to identify the right solution for their business models and requirements, to achieve the desired results.

Security

No company can afford to lose data or accept valuable information being leaked. The design of your infrastructure has a great impact on the security of your database. A well thought-out security concept includes SSL and Row Level Security (RLS) in its development, which reduces the risk of catastrophic security problems. CYBERTEC supports you promptly and efficiently in the development of security concepts and assists in the implementation of these policies. Throughout the entire process, we place great emphasis on the security and stability of your infrastructure.

POSTGRESQL SETUP

For many years, there has been an ongoing discussion about whether to run a single, large database instance or many small database instances. The truth is, either solution can make sense, depending on your requirements. Various aspects have to be considered:

  • How are users organized?
  • What kind of hardware are you running on?
  • What is the desired workload?
  • Which requirements are there in terms of the I/O size?
  • Who is allowed to access the database?

Our consultants will help you to come up with the ideal design, and set-up your system.
